Markham began as a crossroads for pioneers moving through land that belonged to the Ottawa, Chippewa and Potawatomi Native American tribes. The community grew into a village, which was incorporated in 1925 and named for a former president of the Illinois Central Railroad, Charles H. Markham. The city’s symbol, the “Lone Pine Tree,” is derived from the last survivor of six pine trees grown by resident Lawrence Roesner from seedlings brought from Germany’s Black Forest.

Markham was incorporated as a city in 1967 and continued to develop as a bedroom community for much of the surrounding area. Today, Markham covers an area of 5.31 square miles to the southwest of Chicago and is home to a population of 12,508.
